Dear National Semiconductor,

I would like to thank you so much for providing the funds for the Butterfly Grant.  It has truly been such a wonderful success in so many ways. With the funds from the grant, 20 lead second grade teachers visited Heath Scientific in Cedar Hill.  While there, Dr. Pat Nichols provided some general information on the metamorphosis of the caterpillar into a butterfly.  Teachers learned how to care for their caterpillars and what to feed them.   A great benefit of that trip was to open the eyes of the lead second grade teachers to what is available in a facility so close to Mansfield.  Since our trip that day, several teachers have continued to request items from Heath Scientific because they are familiar with this facility and the science materials Pat Nichols has to offer schools.

The following week, 40 teachers were trained by Courtney Williams and Gloria Chatelain from Simple Science Solutions.  I have heard nothing but exciting remarks from the teachers.  Each teacher received a butterfly habitat, 30 caterpillars, 6 readers entitled “Butterflies and Moths” for group reading in their classroom, and another book for the teacher entitled “Writing Strategies for the Science Classroom.”

The best part of the involvement by the teacher was the development of 9 activities related to the butterfly that all second grade teachers will be able to do in the years to come.  This $10,000 has made a huge impact on how this topic will be addressed in the years to come. All the activities will be placed on the MISD intranet.  This grant has impacted not only approximately 1,500 second grade students this year, but it will impact approximately 1,500 second grade students in the years to come.

This has been a wonderful unit to develop.  The teachers, students, administrators, and I were all very pleased with the results on all the different levels.  I truly appreciate the support from National Semiconductor.

Sincerely,
Fred Garza
