Fall 2006 Grants

PROJECT TITLE     SCHOOL     GRANT AMT.

Celebration of Culture    Danny Jones Middle School  $3,402.98

The grant will be used to purchase multicultural novels and books to develop multicultural activities and an advisory program. 

Decoding the Alphabet    Thelma Jones Elementary  $844.75

The grant will be used to purchase Decodable Readers.  The Decodable Readers program is a series of leveled books which help develop literacy and academic content.

Heart Strings     Mary Orr Intermediate  $4,978

The grant will be used to train teachers in a three-day training seminar “Capturing Kids’ Heart.”  The training is geared toward building personal relationships with one another, parents and students.

Fitness Factory    Alternative Education Center   $2,500

The grant will be used to provide physical education equipment to expose students to a wide variety of physical activities.

Discovery and Display What We’re Learning  Cross Timbers Int.  $2,138.93

The grant will be used to purchase graphing calculators.  The graphing calculators will help visualize concepts such as pictographs, circle graphs, bar graphs, and histograms.

Voyage Into Vocabulary   Thelma Jones Elementary    $313.30

The grant will be used to purchase prefixes, suffixes and stems which is a unique deck of cards that presents 500 of the most commonly used affixes and stems from Super Duper Publications. 

Reality Check     Mansfield High School    $4,645.20

The grant will be used to purchase eight computerized infant simulators with curriculum and software for monitoring.

SPICE it up!     Charlotte Anderson Elementary      $1,456.75

The grant will be used to purchase 32 talking spanish/english dictionaries.  The Franklin Student Speaking Dictionary will provide students to express their own ideas in Spanish.

Asian Art     Glenn Harmon Elementary        $857.20

The grant will be used to purchase reference books, calligraphy pens, paper, ink, and VHS instructional tapes.  Multicultural connections become important in building self esteem and tolerance of others.

Can You Hear Me Now?…..   Timberview High School      $2,000

The grant will be used to purchase QuickLink Pens and a classroom subscription to Teen Newsweek.  The QuickLink Pens, which is a hand held assertive reading technology device and is designed to provide students with learning disabilities or reading difficulties.

Movers and Shaker: Frozen Like Wax Cora Spencer Elementary           $2,985.44

The grant will be used to purchase biographies for the school library.  This will allow students to explore biographies, become an expert on one, and teach each other.

You are my Hero    Cora Spencer Elementary     $536.98

The grant will be used to purchase Adobe Photoshop CS-2 WIN and READ CD Set.  Children will be able to connect with their heroes.  When they see the READ posters they dream of being on one.  Children need to see that people in all walks of life see the importance of reading and that we think they are important enough to have their picture on our wall and our book marks.

The Bronco Stomp    Cora Spencer Elementary     $2,200

The grant will be used to purchase common household objects to incorporate music into their daily lives.  During this project, the Spencer Elementary students will develop proficiency in reading and performing music with a variety of traditional and non-traditional instruments.

No More Babble…Let’s Play SCRABBLE Cora Spencer Elementary      $602.82

The grant will be used to purchase nine school SCRABBLE Kits and twelve SCRABBLE Junior board games.  By making vocabulary instruction fun and engaging, through the use of this exciting game, we hope to build vocabulary skills and see measurable increases in school and district student performance objectives.

Measure Your World    Cora Spencer Elementary     $2,213.67

The grant will be used to purchase measurement supplies to make take-home tubs.  Students would practice measuring in real world situations that would improve their math and science measuring skills.  The students will take home 6 different tubs to practice measurement skills including perimeter, area, capacity, volume, weight, and length.

Who Understands Math?   James Coble Middle      $4,975.50

(Huckabee & Associates Grant)

The grant will be used to purchase the Understand Math computer software program.  This program will be used to help learners who need the visualization of instruction at the click of a mouse.

Whack-a-Fact!     Roberta Tipps Elementary     $2,002.73

The grant will be used to purchase Light ‘n’ Strike Math and Math Mat Challenge Game.  The Light ‘n’ Strike Math screen provides the student with the problem such as addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. 

“Puertas Al Sol: A Sunny Way to Learn Spanish Janet Brockett Elementary    $757.44

The grant will be used to purchase the gold and silver Spanish language and multi-cultural learning kits, “Puertas al Sol” from Santillana products.  A Spanish multi-cultural club at Brockett will foster and promote pride and respect for student’s Spanish heritage.

First Grade Goes Wireless!…..   J.L. Boren Elementary      $2,020.70

The grant will be used to purchase a 13-inch 2.0 Ghz Intel Core Duo Mac Book Computer with SuperDrive, APTE Photo Kit Junior & APTE  Digital Photo Activity Kit, a Mac membership, AppleCare Protection Plan for MacBook, AirPort Express and additional supplies.  Having access to a laptop computer would allow these digital students to access their world from their desk, reading circle and their outdoor world.

Phonological Phun    Thelma Jones Elementary      $429.75

The grant will be used to purchase a variety of “Phun” Phonological Awareness activities, including Chipper Chat, Webber Phonological Process (CTOPP), Magnetic Wands and Chi8ps, and Desktop Caddies.  Phonological Awareness activities helps students focus on and manipulate sounds.

SciCast      All MISD Middle School     $4,932

The grant will be used to purchase 18 microphone headsets and 18 iPods. This will allow the students to achieve an understanding on how to use iPODs as an instructional and learning tool and create a renewed interest in classroom  experiences by using new and intriguing technology.

Reading Big, Thinking Big, and…..  Mary Jo Sheppard Elementary    $893.07

The grant will be used to purchase the Think “N” Share Math Readers Shared Reading Library, Early Math Big Book Collections, and Math Big Book Library.  These materials will help the teachers in their Tier Instruction.

Discovery on the Road    Mary Jo Sheppard Elementary    $3,500

The grant will be used to purchase an electrical energy kit, properties and states of matter kit, force and motion/flight kit and staffing for 120 students for three-hour session.  The purpose of the program is to bring hands-on Science Inquiry lessons into the classroom. 

Putting Humpty Dumpty Together Again Mansfield High School      $604.98

The grant will be used to purchase supplies of arts and crafts.  Students will complete a study of various countries and cultures of the world.  As they recreate the popular works of art, they would set a theme of country and time in history, as they work on each type of mosaic.  This will enable students to work on their fine motor skills.

Give Me a Hand: I can “See” Math!  Martha Reid Elementary      $2,624.56

(The Children’s Courtyard Grant)

The grant will be used to purchase 36 sets of Witzzle Pro School Packages, 7 Witzzle Pro Transparency Cards and Number Cubes, 7 Witzzle Pro Resource Book and other Supplies.  The use of these products will allow students to value mathematics, become confident in their mathematical abilities, become problem solvers, and learn to communicate and reason mathematically.

See it, Hear it, Say It….   Marth Reid Elementary     $747.12

The grant will be used to purchase a compact disc player with headphones, an assortment of CD’s with an accompanying paperback book, digital bookmarks, and graph paper.  The grant will create a reading center that increases students’ reading comprehension, vocabulary and fluency. 

Burn baby Burn!    T.A. Howard Middle      $1000

(Medical Center of Arlington)

The grant will be used to purchase UV beads, various types of hats, sunglasses, swatches of clothing, UV nail polish, stop watches, sunscreen, and UV blockers.  The UV ray project will support a study on how the UV rays from the sun can effect the human body especially the eyes and skin.

Messages From the Universe   Donna Shepard Intermediate     $1000

The grant will be used to purchase Jupiter GEMS kit, Jupiter refill kit, Jupiter overhead set, Space GEMS kit and Space refill kit.  The use of these products will be able to capture that natural curiosity and engage students in meaningful investigations that will encourage further understanding. 

A River Runs Through It   Donna Shepard Intermediate     $3.546.98

(Ramtech Building Systems Grant)

The grant will be used to purchase a stream table, STC and GEMS kits and River Kit.  The purpose of this grant is to make the science relevant to the students.

SUM Time Music Makes a DIFFERENCE Charlotte Anderson Elementary    $1,337.85

The grant will be used to purchase fifty small xylophones to use as musical number lines during the teaching of addition (sums) and subtraction (differences). 

Our Neighbor is the World   Anna May Daulton Elementary    $2,500

Through speakers and storytellers Daulton students will be exposed to the cultures represented in both tier school and community.

Grand Old Flag    Thelma Jones Elementary     $826.60

The grant funds will be used to purchase a class library for each grade level including books: F is for Flag, The American Flag, From Cloth to American Flag and “For which it Stands”.

Lights Fantastic    Summit High School      $991.90

The grant funds will be used to purchase  flashlights, colored filters and batteries.  They will learn how the color and quality of light can change photos.

Say It With Hands    Della Icenhower Intermediate     $744.03

The grant funds will be used to purchase sign language text and books and access to the literature, dictionaries, and video presentations that will develop their sign language vocabulary and fluency.

Learn to Read Like a Rock Star  Cora Spencer Elementary     $400

The grant funds will be used to purchase 300 Whisperphones.  The Whisperphone is a hands-free, acoustical voice-feedback headset that enables children to focus and hear phonemes more clearly as they learn to read, spell or process language aloud.

Reading, Listening and Enjoying-Audio…. Anna May Daulton Elementary    $1,200

The grant fund will be used to purchase unabridged audio books and portable CD/cassette players.  This grant will enable students who learn best by listening (auditory learners) to improve their reading skills as they listen to books and follow along with the written text.

Flying Wild     Glenn Harmon Elementary     $1,250.75

(Solvay Engineered Polymers Grant)   

The grant funds will be used to purchase 12”-18” clay pots, Liquid nail, Caulk gun, Exterior acrylic flat paint, paint brushes, poly acrylic glass, cedar board, wood glue and additional supplies for actual construction on birdhouses, birdbaths and bath houses.

Biology in the F.I.E.L.D.S…..   Timberview High School     $4,999.19

(Perdue, Brandon, Fielder, Collins & Mott LLP Grant)

The grant funds will be used to purchase microviewers, slides, digital cameras, measurement and collections materials and various equipment.

Body Quest     James Coble Middle      $3,250.00

The grant funds will be used to purchase Human Body Systems made by Carolina Biological Supply Company that can help us in developing the required module.  The module will be designed to convey to students basic concepts about how body systems, the human circulatory/respiratory, digestive and musculoskeletal systems work together.

TCEA Digital Video Contest   James Coble Middle      $760

The grant funds will be used to purchase a video camera, tripod, and an external microphone.  The grant funds will be used to allow students to gain knowledge on the use of video editing techniques while learning organization, audio editing, camera technique, creative writing, keyboarding skills and science-related skills.

Story Surfers-Surfing Through Knowledge Martha Reid Elementary     $617.95

The grant funds will be used to purchase Story Surfers program, 18 high interest paired fiction and non-fiction titles, interactive CD-ROM and teacher’s ideal book.  The Story Surfers fiction and non-fiction titles will increase the student’s knowledge in science and social studies.

Up Up and Away with the Earth Balloon…. Rogene Worley Middle     $2,600

The grant funds will be used to purchase the Earth Balloon Assembly Program.  The Earth Balloon is a 20 foot diameter model of the earth that students enter to learn about our changing planet.

Pac-man for Pupils    Charlotte Anderson Elementary    $4,924.17

(Vandergriff Chevrolet Grant)

The grant funds will be used to purchase The Leapster Learning Game System, Headphones, Power Strips, A/C adapter, and additional supplies.  The Leapster is a handheld portable unit that mimics Nintendo’s GameBoy, but with important differences that make it not only  more kid friendly, but exceptionally more educational as well.

PLEEEEASE…JUST ONE MORE!!!  Mary Jo Sheppard Elementary    $337.50

The grant will be used to purchase a subscription to ONE MORE STORY for Kindergarten and First Grade classes.  This is a computer reading program that is available with varying levels of difficulty for the children.

Reading Big, Thinking Big, and Using… Mary Jo Sheppard Elementary    $893.07

The grant will be used to purchase the Think “N” Share Math Readers Shared Reading Library, Early Math Big Book Collections, and Math Big Book Library.  These materials will help the teachers in their Tier Instruction.  These materials may be used for whole group Tier 1 instruction and more importantly for struggling students in Tier 2 and 3.

Theory Time     Mary Jo Sheppard Elementary    $304.50

The grant will be used to purchase Theory Time Answer Sheets, Theory Time Fun Sheets and Reproducible Sets for Kindergarten-Fourth.  This grant will provide broad, unifying structures for organizing the knowledge and skills students are expected to acquire.

Music’s My Bag    Mary Jo Sheppard Elementary    $307.65

The grant will be used to purchase a heavy vinyl floor mat, 3 bean bag notes, 19 plastic letters and numbers and an activity brochure.  The student will learn pre-reading (not reading) strategies.

Welcome to Glass Class   Cross Timbers Intermediate     $1,271.51

The grant will be used to purchase a glass fusing furnace, Sax Arts and Crafts Glass Fusing Classroom Assortment and instruction booklet.  The implementation of this grant would give Mansfield intermediate students the opportunity to work with art glass in a way that has not been done our district.

Readers on Stage!    Glenn Harmon Elementary     $2,100.30

The grant will be used to purchase Reader’s Theatre Scripts, Tickets to the performance of Alice In Wonderland, Tickets to the performance of The Great Egg Caper and Transportation to Bass Hall.

The Counselor’s Toolbox   Mary Lillard Intermediate      $676.14

The grant will be used to purchase counseling board games which can be used to encourage children to modify their behavior, increase positive interaction with others, start discussions, address issues and build relationships.

CHAT (Children Hear Authors Talk)  Mary Lillard Intermediate     $2,249.95

(American Eagle Builders Grant)

The grant will be used to purchase the Sony JPEG Network, Camera SNC M1 and Library Books.   This grant increases the choices of books for our students to read.

Choosing to Read    Mary Jo Sheppard Elementary    $1,500

The grant will be used to purchase books from Macklin Library Media.  This enhances the library’s collection in two areas to promote independent and recreational reading.

WOW: Let’s Do That Again…..  Mary Jo Sheppard Elementary    $1,548.25

The grant will be used to purchase First Science Experiments-complete set, Simple Science Exploration Tubs, Science Instant Learning Centers, Sea Life Take Home Pack, Insects and other supplies.  This hands-on material will provide a much clearer understanding of science.

Sensory Journeys through Time  Alternative Education Center     $230

The grant will be used to purchase a Loan Kit Subscription  through the Fort Worth Museum of Science and History.  Each kit contains artifacts related to its theme as well as a notebook of information about the artifacts. 

ALL Aboard: Improving Math Skills…. Tarver-Rendon Elementary     $1,686.93

(Centex Construction Grant)

The grant funds will be used to purchase Checkers, Othelleo, Battleship, Clue, Scrabble, Mastermind, Bobble, Cards and Racko.  This will improve critical thinking skills and to improve the student’s abilities to play together fairly and supportively.

Explore!: Improving Science Skills…..  Tarver-Rendon Elementary     $2,500

(Centex Construction Grant)

The grant funds will be used to purchase equipment to set-up a science laboratory room.  By improving science education we will improve the student’s ability to analyze, synthesize, and draw conclusions.

Planning for the Future   Brooks Wester Middle      $483.23

The grant funds will be used to purchase software that consist of Home Furnishing Templates and Architects Builders Template.  Life skills are essential elements necessary for students to lead productive and independent lives.

Wildcats in Focus    Brooks Wester Middle      $1,354.71

The grant funds will be used to purchase 8 digital cameras, a photo printer, photo paper, extra printer cartridges, memory sticks, digital camera batteries and supplies to construct individual photo journals for each participant.

From ‘Round the World   Martha Reid Elementary     $998.91

The grant funds will be used to purchase interactive Odyssey III Globe from Leap Frog Schoolhouse, Continents of the World Activity Chest, Geography Floor Puzzles, American Landmarks and Symbols poster set and a game called map Tangle-Twister on a World Map.  The globe will enable students to explore the world with an interactive audio component that reinforces facts including continents, countries, capitals, music currencies and culture.

Dino-opoly! Begins the “Education Foundation”… Martha Reid Elementary    $1,788.90

The grant funds will be used to purchase family games ie; Scrabble, Yahtzee, Dino-opoly and Zobmondo.  The teachers and staff at Martha Reid Elementary want to encourage parents to spend quality and valuable time with their children.  We believe in families! By developing a FAMILY FUN NIGHT once a month, they can bring the community together and continue to help the children.

Have Body, Will Travel    Summit High School      $932.12

The grant funds will be used to purchase human anatomy systems, microscope slides, and other equipment to set up the “human body tour”.

Home Tweet Home    Rogene Worley Middle     $851.31

The grant funds will be used to purchase plans and supplies for 8th grade math students to work in groups of 4 to build their own birdhouses. 

G.Y.M.M. Everyday (Get Youngsters Moving at Morris) D.P. Morris Elementary   $903.50

The grant funds will be used to purchase 875 jump ropes.  The purpose of this grant is to go above the state minimum of 135 minutes of PE per week and become even more actively involved in the fight against obesity.
