NEW Grant in Action – Fancy Footwork

aliceponder.jpg

Dear Ms. Bacsik:

Thank you so very much for the “Fancy Footwork” grant that you gave to us last Spring.  The students have had a great time this Fall learning the basics of the piano keyboard and music staff by utilizing the floor keyboard and the floor staff.  The kinesthetic approach utilized by standing on the keyboard and staff made it much more fun to learn as we played games and made music.  The students then wrote on their own keyboard and staff printouts and even composed their own musical pieces that they played on various keyboards around the room.

The students’ comments as they left the music class were:  “Awesome!”, “That was fun!” and “I wish I could give something back to them (the Education Foundation)”.  Perhaps they will remember this grant and will encourage their parents to contribute to the Education Foundation and, in turn, one day, as adults, they will contribute.

As the music teacher, I so enjoyed teaching this unit of study because of having such wonderful materials.  Thank you for enhancing the music program at Alice Ponder Elementary School.

Sincerely,
Mrs. Debbie Brown
Alice Ponder Elementary School

Grants in Action - Knowledge Seekers Club!!

seekers.jpg

The purpose of our grant was to encourage students to become motivated learners by providing resources for students to investigate science and social studies topics. Each student from grades one through four were provided a folder with TEKS-based science and social studies questions from which they chose to investigate. In our internet-driven world, students have fewer opportunities to investigate questions using resources such as an almanac, an atlas, and an encyclopedia. These resources will remind students there are many options for finding information. By supplying students with interesting topic choices and research materials and encouraging them to discover fascinating information, we instill in them the enjoyment of learning for the sake of learning.

Meredith Hatch Memorial Video!

Meredith Hatch was a board member for the MISD Education Foundation for 6 years. She brought enthusiasm to every board member and joy to every teacher she helped award a grant to. Meredith was tragically killed this past year. In a tribute to her, the Education Foundation has established the Meredith Hatch Memorial Grant. Meredith was very passionate about the education of our young people. She owed and operated two Primrose Schools in Mansfield and in Grand Prairie, She also loved to run and compete in bike races. Therefore, her grant will be focused on elementary age children with an emphasis on health and fitness.

This grant will be awarded in the spring of 2009 for up to $6,500.

Meredith Hatch had two passions: children’s education and cycling. After the devoted athlete was killed Sunday during a routine bike ride in Grand Prairie, the Mansfield ISD Education Foundation said Monday that it plans to award a yearly grant in her name. Hatch served on the foundation’s board of directors for almost six years.

“She will be extremely missed,” Executive Director Linda Bacsik said. “She touched so many people.” Grand Prairie police arrested Kenneth Bain. Police said they suspect that he was drunk when his Lincoln Navigator sport utility vehicle struck and killed Hatch, 38, and Mike Alfaro, 36, at about 8:20 a.m. Sunday near Joe Pool Lake.

One of the Mansfield ISD Education Foundation’s most successful fund raising events is the Annual Golf Tournament, which provides an opportunity to mix business with pleasure as we come together with sponsors and supporters. Without the generous support of our many donors and sponsors, none of this would be possible. Your support allows us to find new ways of keeping our schools on the cutting edge and preparing for the future. This is YOUR foundation, and the work we do is YOUR work. We are proud of what we’ve accomplished, but we know that our greatest challenge is to sustain the momentum we have and increase our support to meet the demands of the district.

Grant In Action - Thanks National Semiconductor!

march-sac-vegas-and-easter-354.jpg

May 27, 2008
Dear National Semiconductor,

I would like to thank you so much for providing the funds for the Butterfly Grant.  It has truly been such a wonderful success in so many ways. With the funds from the grant, 20 lead second grade teachers visited Heath Scientific in Cedar Hill.  While there, Dr. Pat Nichols provided some general information on the metamorphosis of the caterpillar into a butterfly.  Teachers learned how to care for their caterpillars and what to feed them.   A great benefit of that trip was to open the eyes of the lead second grade teachers to what is available in a facility so close to Mansfield.  Since our trip that day, several teachers have continued to request items from Heath Scientific because they are familiar with this facility and the science materials Pat Nichols has to offer schools.

In November 2004, J.L. Boren Elementary was awarded a grant from the Mansfield Education Foundation entitled “Different Sizes of Disguises”.  The grant author was Spanish teacher Denise Gunnip.  The objective of Mrs. Gunnip’s grant application was to teach cultural diversity to Boren students through the tools of mask- and puppet-making during Spanish and art enrichment classes.  By following guidelines in George Ancona’s book The Piñata Maker, Boren fourth grade students constructed life-sized, papier-mâché basket puppets. Those puppets are still used for dances during Boren’s Hispanic Heritage celebration held each May.

More Donors See Benefits of Giving Securities Over Cash

More donors are choosing to give charitable gifts in the form of securities — such as stock, mutual funds, and other investments — instead of cash, reports The Wall Street Journal. The current strong stock market as well as benefits of efficiency and tax savings for the donor and the recipient charity seem to be driving this trend, the newspaper says.
