“Serious about Seniors” – Grant In Action!

“Serious about Seniors” funded Spring of 2011 for $3,954.20 at Glenn Harmon Elementary School. Grant provides for five opportunities for service to the Green Oaks Assisted Living Center by the Kindergarten through fourth grade students at Glenn Harmon Elementary. Each grade level sent 50 students to the Assisted Living Center for a 45 minute visit, which included a small gift made by students and either a musical, audiovisual or dramatic performance. Teaching our students to serve others and about older citizens of society, including the value they provide the community, will ultimately help our students increase respect for all community members.

Honored at the Event: Chris Huckabee – Philanthropy - When the foundation discussed who we would like to honor at our first Gala, Chris Huckabee was the first person we thought of.  Chris has been a major contributor to the Mansfield ISD Education Foundation for the past nine years. He is also a contributor to many other Education Foundations in the State of Texas where he does business. He continues to fund grants that have made a significant impact on the students in Mansfield ISD. He also is a major sponsor of the Academic Recognition Banquet that honors the top students in the district and is a platinum sponsor for the Education Foundation golf tournament. The MISD Education Foundation could not have chosen a more worthy person to honor. More

NEW “WeCan….Choose!” Grant Program!!

newprogram.jpg

Click here to enter this section from August 29th – September 29th

The MISD Education Foundation is a 501c3 that has provided more than $2.3 million to teachers in our district to fund innovative projects in our classrooms.   Over the past 12 years we have funded more than 990 grants though two grant rounds a year.  Individual teachers can apply for up to $1000 and a grade level or campus can apply for up to $5000.  Special THINK BIG grants provide $10,000 in funding.  These grants are made possible by the generous donations from businesses and corporations and individuals and organizations in our community.

Last August the MISD Education Foundation added a special Mini-grant round ($250) that inspired teachers to write grants for projects & materials for immediate implementation in their classrooms. The grant request form was quick and easy to use.  The response was outstanding! We had wonderful ideas submitted for projects that teachers wanted to do to enhance the education opportunities for our students.

Last year we received 75 mini-grants totaling $14,500 and funded 25 for $5,062. We would have loved to have provided funding for more great ideas!

This year, we want to give our parents and our community an opportunity to help us fund more of these terrific projects and get much needed resources into our classrooms to benefit our children!

Our commitment is to still spend $5000 on the mini-grant round, as well as provide funding for two grant rounds a year.  For the mini-grant round, teachers may request up to $250 for an individual classroom or up to $1250 for a grade level or campus projects

But we will need your help to make this possible.  Your donations will help to insure that we are able to fund more projects.  After our initial grant approval review, we will provide a list of fundable grants by campus, subject area and grade level. You can help us by making a donation to fund a specific grant on a specific campus or by just making a general contribution to the foundation for fall grants.  Any amount of contribution is welcome and tax deductible!

Starting on August 29 – September 29 you can donate online to specific grants.

Walking a Month in Their Shoes – Poverty Simulation – Annette Perry Elementary School

Walking a Month in Their Shoes – Poverty Simulation – Annette Perry Elementary School
Written by Sondra Thomas, Principal – Grant was awarded Fall 2010 $1,704.00

The funds were used to purchase The Community Action Poverty Simulation and 8 dolls to use with the program.  All materials are in a kit and are reusable. Students that live in poverty tend to have greater academic struggles than their peers that come from financially stable homes. There is a higher rate of behavior incidents and more absenteeism from students of poverty. CAPS will be used to help the teachers have a better understanding of the day to day struggles that some families endure.

The poverty simulation takes approx. 3 hours to run. During a simulation, participants role-play the lives of low-income families, from single parents trying to care for their children to senior citizens trying to maintain their self sufficiency on Social Security.

We thank everyone for all the love we have received, all the offers for help and offers for meals.  We don’t know what we need so we’re not sure what to ask for. I know that some have asked about flowers and some have asked about donations. To be perfectly honest, I never even thought or considered either.  I think the flowers are taken care. I would suggest donations be made to the Mansfield Education Foundation where Wendy worked. Working with Linda, and working for the Foundation brought much joy and happiness to her. She would say “I have the best job; where else can you raise money and then give it all away “.  Funds help support the teachers and students in the school district and she loved being able to part of that.

- Dave Sardella

NOTE: If you plan to make a donation in Wendy’s honor through the website on PayPal, please send an email to lindabacsik@misdmail.org. Give me your name and how much the donation is.

NEW Grant in Action – Fancy Footwork

aliceponder.jpg

Dear Ms. Bacsik:

Thank you so very much for the “Fancy Footwork” grant that you gave to us last Spring.  The students have had a great time this Fall learning the basics of the piano keyboard and music staff by utilizing the floor keyboard and the floor staff.  The kinesthetic approach utilized by standing on the keyboard and staff made it much more fun to learn as we played games and made music.  The students then wrote on their own keyboard and staff printouts and even composed their own musical pieces that they played on various keyboards around the room.

The students’ comments as they left the music class were:  “Awesome!”, “That was fun!” and “I wish I could give something back to them (the Education Foundation)”.  Perhaps they will remember this grant and will encourage their parents to contribute to the Education Foundation and, in turn, one day, as adults, they will contribute.

As the music teacher, I so enjoyed teaching this unit of study because of having such wonderful materials.  Thank you for enhancing the music program at Alice Ponder Elementary School.

Sincerely,
Mrs. Debbie Brown

Thanks to a PTA Funded Grant each MISD school bus is equipped with a seatback slipcover that challenges bus riders to improve their academic vocabulary. The seat has a trio of vocabulary words and definitions screen printed on the area immediately in front of the seated student. The words that are selected are academic words that students need to master to be successful at all grade levels. Students of the different age groups who ride buses thus will be exposed to important words each morning and afternoon. As a result students will improve their vocabulary knowledge and skills. Grants in Action – Junior Jag Bank!!

At Roberta Tipps we wanted to create our own Jr. Jag Bank, we already had our own Safety Patrol and Jr. Jag Mail. Now thanks to the foundation we do. The bank allows our students to save their Jag Bucks and learn the value of long-term savings and real life banking. It also allows them to understand how money functions in their lives. It helps students learn and identify examples of people wanting more than they can have. Explaining why wanting more than they can have requires that people make choices when buying food and services.

Grants in Action – Knowledge Seekers Club!!

seekers.jpg

The purpose of our grant was to encourage students to become motivated learners by providing resources for students to investigate science and social studies topics. Each student from grades one through four were provided a folder with TEKS-based science and social studies questions from which they chose to investigate. In our internet-driven world, students have fewer opportunities to investigate questions using resources such as an almanac, an atlas, and an encyclopedia. These resources will remind students there are many options for finding information. By supplying students with interesting topic choices and research materials and encouraging them to discover fascinating information, we instill in them the enjoyment of learning for the sake of learning.

Meredith Hatch had two passions: children’s education and cycling. After the devoted athlete was killed Sunday during a routine bike ride in Grand Prairie, the Mansfield ISD Education Foundation said Monday that it plans to award a yearly grant in her name. Hatch served on the foundation’s board of directors for almost six years.

“She will be extremely missed,” Executive Director Linda Bacsik said. “She touched so many people.” Grand Prairie police arrested Kenneth Bain. Police said they suspect that he was drunk when his Lincoln Navigator sport utility vehicle struck and killed Hatch, 38, and Mike Alfaro, 36, at about 8:20 a.m. Sunday near Joe Pool Lake.
